Brian & Brandi's Van's RV10 Build

Builders reputation

by Brian Wednesday, June 01, 2011

Well this just tickled me so much at work today I had to post about it.

I'm sitting at my desk at work doing what I do, which is IT stuff. This very nice lady I work with comes over and says, "I know its not your job, but I was wondering if you could help me."  Sure, I say. She presents me with an electronic stapler and says it wont work. "I know you build airplanes so maybe you can figure it out", she says. I chuckle and say sure, why not! So I gave it a shot and got it working. Its not a big deal really and it wasnt rocket science but its not the first time someone has made a comment or had some kind of expectation of me being able to do stuff simply because I'm building a plane so therefore everything else short of that should be childs play. I think thats pretty neat. Building this plane has enrichened my life in ways that I didnt expect and is very rewarding so far and we arent even finished yet!

Falcon RV Squad fly-in

by Brian Friday, May 13, 2011

We are new members of the Falcon RV Squadron! How exciting! They had a huge fly-in this past week down in Peachtree city and it was AWESOME. There were like 50 RVs there including at least 5 or 6 RV-10's. We got to fly up there in our friend Bill's twin Cessna Golden Eagle and I even got to fly right seat! It was an amazing experience. Thank you Bill!  Brandi and I met lots of awesome people at the fly-in and we talked to most of the RV-10 owners and picked their brains. Per usual we always have lots of questions.

Weekend Motivation

by Brandi Friday, April 15, 2011

Not that we need extra motivation right now, we're a couple of good shop days away from finishing up the wings! But, reading this write-up from another RV-10 builder/owner of a recent trip he and his family made to Mexico's Baja Peninsula makes you want to cancel all other weekend plans and work on the plane! Their Bahamas trip is what ultimately sold me on building this airplane in the first place. I can't wait to do this one day!

Georgia Weather

by Brandi Sunday, March 27, 2011

I love building our plane and I think it's awesome that we can do most of it at the house. However, I promise that I will not cry the day it vacates our garage!

Brandi posted the above but I want to hijack her post and show this instant message she just sent me. The interior of her car got soaked and apparently theres a good chance mildew will grow in the foam if all of the carpeting and seats arent pulled out. She could pay the $500 insurance deductable and have it done or ....

Brandi: 6 months ago i wouldn't have even considered disassembling the car. Now I'm like "I got this. I build planes" lol
me: lol

N-number

by Brian Wednesday, December 08, 2010

Its official, we reserved our N-number. For aviation novices, this is your plane's identifer number aka 'tail number'. There are certain character requirements and so we picked 42BU. Its significance? Well, both our initials are BU so "For two BU".

Toolbox complete!

by Brian Thursday, September 09, 2010

We completed the toolbox last night. I'm almost embarrassed of it. I think I will name it frankentoolbox haha. It served its purpose though and that was for us to learn how to do things on. It turns out Brandi is pretty pro with AN470 style (cupped) rivets and I am better with the flush rivets. I'm excited that we both have our strengths and I think that will empower us through this build.

It's ALIVE!

Welcome!

Brandi's working on getting this site up and going and Brian is researching propellers and instruments for the panel. So far we have built two EAA work benches, received our test Toolbox Kit from Van's and ordered the RV Builder Tool Kit. Brian's dad is coming into town next weekend to help us work on building the workshop. This week we're going to place the order for the wing kit and, in about 3 weeks, we're driving to Ohio to purchase a 95% complete Empennage kit.
